
Why the Number on Your Lacrosse Net Isn’t a Rules Requirement
You went looking for a replacement net and found a wall of numbers. Five millimeter, six millimeter, seven millimeter. Round corners, square corners, universal. Velcro or lace-on. Nothing on any of those pages explains which one you’re supposed to buy, and the assumption most people land on is that a bigger number means “more legal.”
It doesn’t. Lacrosse net thickness refers to the gauge of the twine, and no rulebook regulates it. The NCAA rules cap the net’s mesh openings at 1.5 inches and require the net be fastened to the posts, crossbar and ground so a ball can’t pass through, but say nothing about twine thickness. Thicker twine is a durability decision: it survives sun, weather and hard shooting longer. A thinner net is not less legal.
That reframes the whole purchase. You’re not buying compliance. You’re buying seasons.
What the rules actually say
Worth being precise here, because this is the part everyone gets wrong.
The NCAA men’s rulebook specifies that the net’s mesh must not exceed an inch and a half, and that the net has to be fastened to the goal posts, crossbar and the ground to prevent the ball passing through. The women’s rulebook uses the same 1.5 inch cap and adds that no hole or gap may be large enough for a ball to pass, and that nets may be any solid color.
That’s it. Mesh aperture is regulated. Twine gauge is not. There is no minimum millimeter anywhere in the rules, and nobody is going to measure your twine before a game.
So what’s the number for? Durability, and to a lesser extent how the net looks and sounds when a ball hits it. A thicker twine has more material to lose before it fails, holds its shape better under repeated impact, and takes longer to degrade in UV.

A few things fall out of that table that are worth saying plainly.
The replacement ladder starts at 5.0 mm. If your goal shipped with a 3.0 mm net and that net has gone, you’re not replacing like for like. You’re stepping up. That’s not a sales pitch, it’s just what exists.
The UV coating starts at 6.0 mm. Gladiator states a UV and weather-resistant finish on the heavy duty square, the black nets and the universal options. It’s not stated on either 5.0 mm net or on the 6.0 mm white round. If your goal is going to sit in full sun through a summer, that’s the single most relevant line on the spec sheet, more than the millimeter number itself.
Higher isn’t automatically better for you. A 7.0 mm net on a goal that lives in a garage nine months a year is spending money on a problem you don’t have. Match the net to the exposure, not to the top of the range.
Round corners, square corners, and how to tell which you need
This trips up more buyers than thickness does, and the answer is simpler than it looks: match the net to the shape of your goal’s frame.
Round corners are for goals where the top corners curve rather than meeting at a sharp angle. Gladiator’s backyard goals are built this way, and you can see it immediately, because the frame bends through the corner instead of being welded into a right angle.
Square corners are for goals with welded right-angle corners, the cleaner, more stadium-looking build. The Professional goal is the square-corner example in Gladiator’s own lineup.
Universal nets, including the Velcro version and the 7.0 mm, are cut to work with either.

Velcro or lace-on
A smaller decision than the others, but a real one if you’ve ever laced a net in the cold.
Lace-on is the traditional method and it’s what most nets use. You thread lacing cord through the net and around the frame, all the way around. It’s secure, it’s what programs generally use, and it takes a while the first time. Goal lacing cord is a consumable — it wears out before the net does.
Velcro attachment exists on a 6.0 mm universal net and is meaningfully faster to fit and remove. If you take your goal down at the end of every season, or you swap nets, that time adds up. It’s also the friendlier option if the person doing the job is a parent rather than a coach with a whole roster to help.
There’s no performance difference in how the net plays. It’s purely about how the net gets attached and how often you plan to attach it.
How to know when to replace
Nobody publishes a lifespan for a lacrosse net, and any content that gives you a number in seasons is guessing. At least one goal manufacturer explicitly declines to give a timeframe and points to visible damage instead. That’s the right approach.
Replace when you see:
- Holes or gaps a ball can fit through. In the women’s game that’s an explicit rules problem, and in any game it’s a scoring dispute waiting to happen.
- Fraying at the corners and along the bottom. Ground balls hammer the bottom edge and the corners take the most stress from being pulled taut.
- Twine that’s gone brittle or chalky. That’s UV damage, and it means the net will start failing in several places at once rather than one.
- Attachment points tearing out. Sometimes the net is fine and the lacing has failed. Check that before you buy a whole net.
Inspect at the start and end of each season. That’s a five-minute job that catches nearly everything.
Which one to actually buy
If your goal lives outside year-round in real sun, get a 6.0 mm or 7.0 mm with the stated UV finish. If your goal comes down for the off-season and gets stored, 5.0 mm is genuinely enough and there’s no reason to spend past it. If you’re running a program with mixed frames, universal nets save you inventory headaches. If you hate lacing, the Velcro option is worth it for that reason alone.

The millimeter number is a durability rating, not a legality rating. Buy the thickness that matches your weather exposure, match the corner style to your frame’s shape, and replace on visible damage rather than on a calendar.
